Our new series of articles featuring Dew Drop Inn Farm's, Abbey Williams.
Abbey does training for Western Pleasure, Trail, Hunter Pleasure driving and jumping. She has a quiet and calm training method with the horses comfort being of utmost importance.
Abbey is currently taking reservations and bringing in horses to train that are starting from scratch or ones that have some training already behind them. In this series Abbey will show us the training of NT Scarlets Legacy. The first chapter of the journal will show Abbey working Legacy in the round pen and him joining up with her and following her around like a 'puppy'.
The journey begins here.........
First must come trust and respect........
In the first phase of my training, one of the first things that I do is establish communication with the horse or pony that I am working with, all is lost without that. I also have to gain respect/trust of the horse or pony, in this instance it is gaining the respect/trust of Legacy. I think that the best way to achieve this is by working in the round pen. I like to keep it simple, just asking the horse to go out and work on the rail, to stop when asked or to come in, then to go back out again. It gives the horse a chance to get to know me and me to know him. Let's him know that I am the dominant/Alfa one and he is the follower. Communication and respect are earned. Sometimes it takes a couple weeks, but these first two things are a vital part of training and as much time as needed must be taken to establish them. It didn't take Legacy long, just a few days and I was able to go forward and hop up for the first time.
