Subject: Equine Anemia Positive

Dear Veterinarians and Equine Farmers,

On June 29, 2005 a horse was sold through the Meadville Livestock
Auction to a buyer in Lawrence County. This horse tested positive for
Equine Infectious Anemia on July 5th. The horse left an Ohio sale with
a Coggins test pending. The sample had been drawn, but testing had not
been completed. The horse had arrived in PA and been sold again before
test results were obtained. This kind of movement with pending tests
is illegal. Action has been taken by the Ohio Department of Agriculture.

The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture is continuing to
investigate this case in order to identify horses that were stabled or
transported with this animal. If you or your clients purchased any
horses from the Meadville Livestock Auction on June 29th, it would be
a very good idea to isolate these animals from other equines. As you
know, the incubation period for this disease in 45 days. The animal
may test negative for EIA during the incubation period and during
cases of acute illness.

You can obtain more information about this disease from the USDA's
website at:
http://www.aphis.usda.gov/lpa/pubs/fsheet_faq_notice/fs_aheia.html
We will continue to provide you with more information as it becomes
available.

This case emphasizes the importance of testing animals for this
disease prior to purchase.
