Kenny Harlow Who?
Many of you have been
reading Kenny Harlow's training articles, but you may not know alot about
Kenny or his background. We thought it might be nice to use this opportunity
to tell you a little about him. So, here goes........
Kenny was raised on a farm in Culpeper, Virginia. He now resides with his wife, Missy, on their ranch in Cumberland where he trains horses. He is internationally known and even completed an eight-day clinic tour hosted by the AQHA UK in England. Kenny has worked thousands of horses and travels all over the east coast each year teaching approximately 20 clinics. He is also sponsored by Southern States Cooperative and makes numerous appearances doing training demonstrations and clinics for them throughout the spring and summer months.
Recently John
and Jody Lyons visited Kenny at his ranch in Virginia. Here John is riding
Blue while Kenny is on Tigger, the horse he is now training for use as Blue's
"back up".
For the past ten years, Kenny and his horse (and best friend) “Blue” have participated at top-rated events such as Horse World Expos in Maryland, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. They have also made appearances at the Festival of Champions, Equine Affaire in Massachusetts and Ohio as well as the Virginia Equine Extravaganza and the North American Horse Spectacular in Novi, Michigan. Blue has been traveling with Kenny ever since he took his business "on the road" and has proven numerous times that he is not only Kenny's "partner", but also his best friend. Recently, Kenny has been training a new horse named Tigger for use as a "back up" for Blue.
While at home, Kenny leads four 3-week apprenticeship programs as well as an on-going intense and comprehensive certification program annually for any one wishing to study under him. He not only teaches the basics, but has the skill to guide owners in more advanced techniques for training their horses. Kenny also does some private training when there’s an opening in his busy schedule. Last winter he spent a week in Florida working with International Grand Prix jumper trainer Molly Ashe and her horses. He will be heading down there again this winter for some follow up work with Molly.
Early in his career, when the movie "The Horse Whisperer" was released, Kenny was featured in several national television shows. Airing in May of 1998, both "Hard Copy" and "NBC Today Show" had segments on "Kenny Harlow, A Real Life Horse Whisperer". And just this past summer, Kenny and one of his Certified Trainers, Leslie Gottesman, did a human-interest feature on horse training for Fox 5 News in Washington, DC. He has also been on several radio shows including Horse Talk Radio Show in Denver, Colorado and was a guest twice on the Cablevision show "Hoofbeats". Kenny has been featured in the Chronicle of the Horse, Southern States’ Mane Points, Horse World Magazine, The Northeast Equine Journal as well as Horse News. Kenny and “Blue” have been cover boys for Equine Journal and New York Horse. In addition to his various feature articles, Kenny also writes a monthly training article for distribution in Southeast Equine Monthly, Shore Horse Talk, Clifton Horse Society Lead Line as well as for posting on the equine website, www.feedscoop.com.
Kenny has built up the solid foundation for his training method, which he calls “Training With Trust”. He has developed and refined his techniques, helping thousands of horse owners humanely and sensibly work through difficult and often unsafe issues. His "round pen" training methods combined with his own special talent and rapport with horses is gaining respect and recognition from owners and trainers alike. Kenny not only teaches the basics but can also solve the most difficult of problems using humane techniques. Kenny’s specialty is working with problem horses and starting unbrokes by giving them a solid foundation. Kenny’s talent and expertise in training is not only limited to problem and unbroke horses…many a horse and rider have benefited from his three-day conditioning/response riding clinics. Kenny’s riding clinic is a conditioning training clinic that trains the horse while the rider is learning these techniques. It is very popular and has participants ranging from backyard horse owners to top trainers and Olympic riders. Kenny’s clinics have benefited many 4-H clubs and nonprofit organizations not only financially and by increasing membership, but by also educating the equine public.
Kenny is a real life educator, restoring broken relationships by building confidence and trust in the owners and the horses. By explaining basic horse psychology to his clients, he helps them to better understand and follow through with their own training, building a lasting bond of trust between horse and rider.
