Kenny Harlow Clinic

Kenny Harlow will be in our area for two 5-Day "Mini Apprenticeship" programs this fall. The dates are Sept 30-Oct 3 and Nov 4-Nov 8. Both clinics will be held at John and Nina Davis' farm in American Corners (between Federalsburg and Denton, MD) Harmony Acres. Cost for all 5 days is $1000, but we are also splitting the program up so that if you are a "working person" and have used all your vacation time (or your boss doesn't accept "I am having horse withdrawal and need to play with my horsies for the next three days" as an excuse for sickleave), you can attend the "weekend only" for $400.
We will be using some of the new things that are outlined in the following
article, including tackling some of each person/horse's problems as a class.
Should be really fun and informative. If any of your readers got to see
Kenny's demos at Outlaw Days this year, they know they are in for some real
horse training. Auditors are welcome, $35 per day, $30 per day if they are
pre-registered. They will get to see Kenny working with horse owners to
help them learn how to solve their horse's problems by themselves. The rider
spots for the first clinic are almost full, (weekend-only is full, but we
do have a couple spots left if there are any folks who want to do the whole
5 days). We still have openings for the 2nd dates.
Also, Kenny may have some time on the morning of October 5th to do a private
lesson (trailer loading, etc) if someone is interested...see his website
or call his office 434-983-2221 for information or prices.
If anyone is interested in the clinics, please call Missy at Kenny's ranch
office at the number above or Kris Penrod (locally) in Seaford at 443-205-0019.

A Fresh Approach to Riding Clinics
First of all, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank those of you that have attended my riding clinics in the past. I hope that you have continued to use the skills you and your horse learned to improve your relationship. And, I hope that you have also been able to transfer those skills to other horses in your barn. Learning never stops; you train your horse every time you ride it, whether you know it or not.
This next year, I am hoping to add a little something different to my riding clinics. We will still learn the "basics" of the Format 1 and/or Format 2 clinics (giving to the bit, softening, calm down cues, etc.), but we will be approaching these skills from a different direction. I’ve been experimenting with some of my Certification Students and their horses with some new and exciting exercises that will achieve the same goals but enable you and your horse to get there faster and have more fun doing it. I don’t want to give away any "secrets" in this article, but I will say this. I can guarantee that at the end of the three day clinic you will be saying "Wow, I can’t believe the change in me and my horse!".
Now, with that being said, I also wanted to make my clinics more "client
pleasing". Although the vast majority of clients are very happy with
the new skills they and their horses have learned in the past, I still wanted
to find a way to make the clinics more personal. So, in future riding clinics,
I will be adding a little "extra" that should give each individual
a chance to really "get their money’s worth" out of the clinic.
At the initial rider’s meeting at the beginning of the first day of the
clinic, I will give each rider a piece of paper and a pencil. They will
be given the opportunity to think for a moment and then write down two things
that they would like to accomplish with their horse during the clinic. These
may be written in the form of "problems"...ie: "my horse
rubs on me too much", "my horse won’t stand still when I get on",
"my horse is a scaredy cat". Chances are that many of the "issues"
you are having with your horse are shared by other riders in the group as
well! And, the way to solve many of these problems is to "get back
to basics".
It is my hope that when you come away from my riding clinics in the future, you won’t just feel like you were taught a lot of "skills" to use with your horse, but you will also understand "why" you were taught these particular skills. In other words, how do the basic exercises relate to solving real, everyday problems with my horse?
I know what you are thinking...how in the world are you going to address two problems from each of up to 10 riders and their horses in just 3 days? Well, like I said, I’m not going to give away any "secrets", but I will tell you that I’m excited about the new exercises and how they will allow us to go further faster with our horses. I also plan to have an assistant with me at these riding clinics so that we can separate into smaller groups to work on "like issues". Then, we will "switch trainers" and re-evaluate. Through the years, I’ve found that folks learn differently and some people relate to different teachers better than others. Although all of my Certified Trainers have the same skills, each of them is an individual with their own personal methods of teaching. I would like to expose my clients to as much individual attention as I can during the 3 day clinics. Having an assistant will allow me to do this. Don’t worry though, when you sign up for a Kenny Harlow 3-Day Riding Clinic, you will still get the real me for all three days. It’s just that now, you will get even more personal attention.
I’m excited about the new riding clinic approach. Even if you have attended a riding clinic in the past, I promise you won’t be disappointed if you sign up again. Even if you bring the same horse, you will learn new and exciting skills and exercises. And, most of all, you won’t be bored. With the addition of the "problem solving" aspect, every clinic will be a different, so you will probably find yourself wanting to follow up your first riding clinic with another...and another! As I said earlier, learning never stops. But, most of all you can look forward to having fun...you will still learn the "fun"damentals, but the emphasis will be on the word FUN...for both you and your horse.
