Equine Herpes Virus, Rhinopneumonitis (EHV-1 and EHV-4)
PLEASE get your horses VACCINATED!!!!!!!!!!!!!! For both EHV 1 and EHV 4!!
What is EHV-1 and EHV-4? What does it do?
EHV-1 causes abortion, perinatal mortality, respiratory disease and neurological signs in horses.
There are five
5 recognized herpesviruses that the equine is a natural host for:
EHV-1 Equine viral abortion and neurologic disease
EHV-2 Currently recognized as a gamma herpesvirus
EHV-3 Equine coital exanthema
EHV-4 Rhinopneumonitis virus
EHV-5 Currently recognized as a gamma herpesvirus
The alpha virus' of the five are the 1,3 and 4. EHV1 and EHV 4 are the ones seen or heard about the most. EHV 1 and EHV 4 have both been reported to cause respiratory disease. It is spread rapidly by direct contact, ingestion of contaminated food or water and by aerosol transmission.
